Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 20th Feb 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog. Just one episode tonight, due to the 'BRITS' so let's delve into this week's mid-week drama.

Amy leaves Ken's for the day, as Steve and Tracy continue to argue, oblivious to what Amy has planned. Arriving home, Amy is non-plussed about spending the school holidays with her parents. Craig and Bethany offer the gymslip mum some advice, but it seems she is continuing with her plan to terminate the pregnancy. Fearful of her trip to the clinic, Amy invites Bethany to go with her.

Sophie collars Kevin about Jack's school trip and begs him to let her help pay. Kevin's male pride continues to get in the way. Whilst Tyrone has to swallow his pride, and ropes in Ruby in a plan to apologise properly to Mary. The plan, although failing, does seem to bring the lonesome duo back together.

At Underworld, Beth is getting tired fixing up Kate's wedding dress. Sean decides that a night out is what the gang need. Sally is up for it, as long as Gina isn't invited. Gina's guilt is obvious, and Sally is still unforgiving. Gina proposes a party to Sophie, in hope of getting her sister back on side.
Meanwhile, the brides-to-be are reunited when Kate returns from visiting her sick cousin. Rana, meanwhile, has been busy getting the wedding invitations sent out.

Whilst Amy heads to the clinic for a termination, Steve decides to surprise Tracy with a house viewing on Victoria Street. Both remain completely unaware of Amy's resolve, and argue over Oliver, instead.

As the charred wreckage of 'Lost Bouy' is towed away from the street, Abi admits her sailing sadness to Roy. Casually overhearing, Peter seems to think that Abi is talking about him! Wishing to kiss and makeup, Peter's conceited (thanks Roy!) behaviour fails to win his ex-shipmate over.

With the wedding invites dished out, it seems Rana has invited the whole of Weatherfield, much to Kate's dismay.

Amy returns from her appointment at the clinic with Bethany. As Steve and Tracy celebrate winning a bid on the house, Amy appears to be ill with stomach cramps. Has she really terminated the pregnancy?

It may only be one episode tonight, but at least it was a good one.  Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 13th Feb 8.30pm

As promised, here is part two of this Wednesday's Corrie, all wrapped up in a handy blog review.

A distraught Abbie confronts Peter in the pub about his 'lost buoy' lies. Abbie, wounded once again, drowns her sorrows. Is she going to be ok?.

At the hospital, Shona battles Clayton over the failed drug deal. Resenting her new life, Clayton tells his mother to leave.
Back home, David quizzes Shona about Claytons beating. Deciding to take Shona out to dinner, has David matured enough to forget about Clayton murdering his wife?

On board 'lost buoy' Adi and Asha leave Simon alone, making sure the nautical gas lamp is blown out.. or is it?. Simon relaxes on the boat, with his headphones in.

At Chesney's, it looks like Gemma is finally going to get that quickie, until Joseph, angry at no bedtime stories, foul mouths his Dad. It's lucky that the car drove past at the exact moment!.

Realising that Gemma has taught Joseph some of her fruity vocabularies, we witness the first argument between Corrie's newest lovebirds. Gemma consults love guru Brian, who gives a Freudian suggestion of unconscious thought processes, completely confusing Gemma!.

Outside of the boat, an unseen person seems to sit port side and knocks over the gas lamp, which hasn't been blown out properly and the boat catches fire!!!!. Poor Simon, first the bookies, now a boat!.

At Ty's, Mary is still playing housemaid, but has Kevin clocked other intentions?...it is almost Valentine's day, after all.

Waking to a suffocating stream of smoke and fire, Simon is overcome by fumes. Heading to the factory fire escape, Peter rushes onboard to save his son. With the fire brigade on their way, nearby residents are evacuated. Kevin Webster blasts his fire extinguisher to put out the flames, and Simon is saved.

Carla cradles a frightened Peter, as the fire licks underworlds signage. Flamin' Nora!.

Is this the end of Peters Kefalonia dream, and who was the mystery fire starter?.

Out on the street, the firemen arrive, just as Gail escapes her house, which has also caught fire!.

Peter immediately comes to one conclusion - Abi. Has his vengeful former flame drunkenly torched the boat?. It will be interesting to find out. Keep your eyes on this blog, more for revelations!.

Anyway, that's all for this Wednesday. Your thoughts on this mid-week double? for me, it was the f- word; Fish fingers, fraternising, and F&&%!, that's FIRE! of course!. TA-RA

It's a Sailor's Life for Peter Barlow

When Carla Connor gifted Peter Barlow a clapped out boat for Christmas, and agreed to let the gargantuan rust bucket sit outside Underworld while it was renovated, I did wonder what on earth was going on. Could anything be less Carla?

But, as soon as the ‘Lost Buoy’ was installed in front of the Platts' front door, I instead found myself asking, could anything be more Peter?

Here, in no particular order, are nine reasons why Captain Barlow is the best sailor in dry dock.

Gum chewing / Smoking into the Middle Distance

Okay, so they’re unlikely to have had Wrigleys Extra on the HMS Bounty. But, extended shots of Peter looking wistfully into the grey yonder atop his boat while philosophising, smoking or nurturing a minty chew has made him look every bit the navvy.

Sitting in the Dock of the Bay

She’s docked, me hearties, in the Underworld Loading Bay. Take the loading part out, and you’re basically left with the latest installment of Pirates of the Corriebean.

Aye Aye, Cap'n!

Every skipper needs a trusty decky, and with son Simon in dire need of something useful to do, who better? But alas, Leanne Battersby plucked a crow on hearing about his plans to sail around the Caribbean with Peter for the summer, and revealed that Simon hadn’t been keeping up with his school work – a condition of any continued swashbuckling. And so that was the end of that, which fair took the wind out of young Simon’s sails.

A Girl in Every Port

A bit more difficult in dry dock, but Peter has still managed to have two women on the go whilst not sailing the high seas. No sooner had Abi Franklin examined his engine than she was hired. Not just in it for the pieces-of-eight though, she then happily confined herself to close quarters where she swiftly ensured the games of cards took a back seat.

With Abi below deck, and windswept Carla looking down from the balcony of Underworld like Kate Winslet in Titanic, well, the cobbles may as well have dissolved to water. A blast of Celine D, anyone?

Yo! Ho! Ho! and a Bottle of…

No, Peter doesn’t have any rum aboard, for reasons apparent. Abi may have gone out in sympathy with a bottle of faux plonk, and taken a day off from keeping the good ship Rovers Return afloat by stealthily emptying barrels of Newton & Ridley. But, he looks every bit the sailor regardless, even with a brew.

Arrr! Treasure!

What sailor worth his sea salt doesn’t know his fools gold from his 24 karat? When Roy dropped by with a treasure trove of Sylvia’s jewels to ask which one he should gift to Carla, Peter didn't so much as blink as he made his selection.

Tales of the Sea

A sailor’s tales are as vast as the ocean, and lie on the dark sea bed until awakened when the occasion demands. Peter looked to the stars as he told Simon about "Uncle" Ciaran’s salty shenanigans, because you never look directly at anyone when conveying your stories of a nautical nature.

There was also a marvellous scene in which the Lost Buoy prompted grieving Roy to recall some childhood memories, and relate them to Peter. It was its own treasure trove of beautiful writing and fine performances, and I loved it.

Sailor Slang

We’ve heard Captain Barlow use nautical terms like ‘land lubber’ to describe Gail, who conveniently forgets that Joe McIntyre was happily docked in the same spot so she can have a right moan every time she nips out for milk.

But the sailor lingo is coming out in Peter in other ways too. Like quoting and amply impersonating hardened sea dog Quint from Jaws. He also displayed Quint’s tact, insulting Adam over both his unsuitability for a life at sea - “You’ve got city hands Mr. Barlow." - and his chosen career - "That’s not workin’, it’s a slow death.” Well shiver me timbers!

Sailor Style
Tattoos are a must for any self-respecting sailor. And while there may be a pirate on the Victoria Street Tattoo Parlour sign, we all know it's not a place Peter Barlow needs to visit. He's also swapped the Fred Perry for a fisherman's sweater. I'm not sure I’ve ever seen him in one up to now, but the wool seems to have gotten chunkier and the roll necks bigger with each passing episode. He has also ditched the hipster hair for a cut more in keeping with a man of the sea. That'll be a relief to Nick who will be spared the effort of having to come up with gurns and one liners to prod him with at the new barbers.

Right now, Peter is probably looking wistfully north at the grey Manchester skies through a fog of his usual as he dreams of Kefalonia, and I for one am quite happy to let him.
